Generative Engine Optimization

What is a GEO score?

A GEO score (Generative Engine Optimization score) is a 0–100 measure of how ready your website is to be cited by AI engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. Higher score = more AI citations.

GEO score bands

0–29Critical gaps

AI engines are unlikely to cite your content. Fundamental issues with indexability, structured data, or content depth.

30–49Below average

Occasional citations for high-volume queries, but missing on most long-tail and conversational searches.

50–69Average

Cited for some queries. Structured data partially implemented. Content depth adequate but not optimized.

70–84Strong

Regular citations across query types. Structured data solid, content well-structured, AI crawlers permitted.

85–100Best-in-class

Highly citeable across all engine types. Top-tier FAQ coverage, schema, content depth, and authority signals.

GEO score — frequently asked questions

What is a GEO score?

A GEO score (Generative Engine Optimization score) is a 0–100 metric that measures how ready a website or web page is to be cited by AI engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. It evaluates 10 criteria that AI engines use when deciding what to recommend: structured data quality, FAQ coverage, content depth, heading structure, AI crawler access, author signals, internal linking, page speed, canonical health, and external citation count.

What is a good GEO score?

Scores above 70 indicate strong AI search readiness and consistent citation across most query types. Scores of 50–70 are average — you'll be cited for some queries but not others. Below 50 signals significant gaps. Most unoptimized websites score between 35–55. After implementing the top recommendations, sites typically see 15–30 point improvements within 6–8 weeks.

How is GEO different from SEO?

Traditional SEO optimizes for Google's ranked list of 10 blue links. GEO optimizes for AI-generated responses that summarize and cite sources. The signals differ meaningfully: GEO weights structured data (especially FAQPage and HowTo schema), explicit Q&A content, topical completeness, and E-E-A-T more heavily. Keyword density matters less. Both disciplines reinforce each other — strong GEO pages tend to rank well in traditional search too.

How do I improve my GEO score?

The five highest-impact improvements are: (1) Add FAQPage JSON-LD schema with 8–12 Q&A pairs matching your target queries, (2) Increase content to 2,000+ words with clear H2/H3 structure, (3) Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt (GPTBot, Claude-Web, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended), (4) Add named author bios, publication dates, and 'About' page content, (5) Build internal links from topically related pages to reinforce authority signals.

How often should I check my GEO score?

Check your GEO score after any major content changes, after adding or removing structured data, and monthly as a health check. Your GEO citation rate (how often AI engines actually mention you) should be checked daily — the free citation checker and PresenceAI's monitoring platform handle this automatically.
